Did you see the latest fan from Noctua? It's a 140 mm fan, but since it has a round design, it fits onto mounting holes for 120 mm square fans. I wonder how cooler my CPU would be if I mounted it onto my Noctua NH-C12P.

As for how much cooler it would be, I doubt much, if any if you're already using a high-quality 120mm fan. Your best bet is to opt for a 38mm thick 120mm fan, since they have higher static pressure which is how fans move air through heatsinks (CFM is useless for a heatsink fan, it's all about pressure). My Panaflo H1 keeps my E6600 about 2-3c cooler at the same RPM as my Scythe S-Flex SFF21F, although it is noticeably louder.

Interesting second point. I didn't know about the relationship between thickness and temperature for heatsink fans. I wouldn't trade C°C for a susbtantial increase in noise though. Well, it might not be a problem if your PC was very silent to begin with.

As for the second point, a thicker fan just creates more pressure - it doesn't have to be loud about it (my Panaflo usually runs at around 1200RPM and still keeps my idling CPU very cool), although there will naturally be more airflow noise. I'm running it off a fan controller anyway, so it's quiet or loud as required.
