New case and RAM ordered

Tue Jun 9, 2009, 11:24 PM
I pulled the trigger today, and my new Lian-Li PC-P50 case is in the mail, along with the EX-332B hard drive cage and 2x2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800 RAM. Pictures will be coming soon, and hopefully I'll be able to get an entire tutorial with pictures going sometime next week.

Ah, it'll be nice to have a good case.

Next upgrades planned:

New CPU cooler
Possibly two 140mm fans depending on how well the stock ones perform.
Solid State Drive (after Windows 7 comes out and SSD prices drop to ~$1/GB)
New graphics card (DirectX 11 only)

  • Listening to: Jean Elan - Killer (Jean Elan Mix)
  • Reading: Jeff Long - The Descent
  • Watching: Gran Torino
  • Playing: Team Fortress 2
  • Drinking: Hennessy & Coke

Huzzah and hurrah! Lian-Li's stock fans seem fairly good, I'm still using them in my P60 case but then...it is a little overkill on the fans. Half tempted to see if I can replace them all with Noctua or Enermax see if there's much difference, but that can wait 'till I have a job.

I'm really into Lian-Li myself, though I'm waiting to change my whole computer to get a Lian-Li case.

Did you see the latest fan from Noctua? It's a 140 mm fan, but since it has a round design, it fits onto mounting holes for 120 mm square fans. I wonder how cooler my CPU would be if I mounted it onto my Noctua NH-C12P.

I know their 120mm units are decent enough (although I will be replacing them since I have half a dozen high-quality units), but I'm not sure how good their 140mm fans are.

See, I don't need a 140mm fan with 120mm mounts, I need an actual 140mm fan (two actually). Well, I might anyway.

As for how much cooler it would be, I doubt much, if any if you're already using a high-quality 120mm fan. Your best bet is to opt for a 38mm thick 120mm fan, since they have higher static pressure which is how fans move air through heatsinks (CFM is useless for a heatsink fan, it's all about pressure). My Panaflo H1 keeps my E6600 about 2-3c cooler at the same RPM as my Scythe S-Flex SFF21F, although it is noticeably louder.

Hmm, I think I need to upgrade *something* on my pc before I go mad. Waiting for dx11 is taking its toll. I am glad to hear though that it's going to be mainly compatible with current hardware, its really just the tesselation features wont be from what I understand?

Yeah, I know you need fans that mount onto 140 fittings, I was just sayin' in case you needed one of those. I dope hope Noctua will make "real" 140 mm fans in the future, so that I definitely know what go onto spare 140 mm mounts should I get a tower that has those.

Interesting second point. I didn't know about the relationship between thickness and temperature for heatsink fans. I wouldn't trade C°C for a susbtantial increase in noise though. Well, it might not be a problem if your PC was very silent to begin with.

Tessellation and possibly some more advanced shader features. We won't be seeing those for a couple years though.

Yeah, I'm hoping that with more and more manufacturers coming out with 140mm products, we'll see high-end fans to fit them before too long.

As for the second point, a thicker fan just creates more pressure - it doesn't have to be loud about it (my Panaflo usually runs at around 1200RPM and still keeps my idling CPU very cool), although there will naturally be more airflow noise. I'm running it off a fan controller anyway, so it's quiet or loud as required.

Hmm, do you think the new gpu's are going to be worth the money though? I mean you can now grab a 260 for the price I got my 9800gt for.

With a new case and RAM coming soon, I'll be taking apart my computer. Would you like to see a dA exclusive step-by-step guide on assembling a PC?
